Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Denver
At the Bariatric Surgery Center Denver, Dr. Frank H. Chae, bariatric surgeon, utilizes the gastric sleeve procedure for weight loss. This surgery is done laparoscopically (minimally invasive surgery) to minimize pain and speed up healing.
Gastric sleeve is different from gastric bypass surgery and adjustable gastric banding; through consultation with our team, you and your surgeon will discuss what weight-loss procedure is best for you.
The Gastric Sleeve Procedure
Gastric sleeve is the surgical removal of a portion of the stomach to create a long tubular or "banana" shaped stomach. This surgery involves surgical stapling, cutting, and removal of stomach parts, but unlike gastric bypass, it does not alter intestines and unlike gastric banding surgery, gastric sleeve surgery does not require adjustments after surgery or leave behind an artificial device inside the body.
Gastric Sleeve Results
Weight loss resulting from gastric sleeve is similar to gastric restriction (adjustable gastric banding). Some results have been similar to that of gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) patients. Long term (more than 5 year) studies are not yet available, but results do show that co-morbidity (diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or sleep apnea) resolution 12 to 24 months after sleeve gastrectomy is comparable to other restrictive procedures.
