What to Expect During a Thyriod Uptake & Scan
Upon arrival to the department you will receive 1 or 2 capsules of radioactive-iodine. Please note that even if you are allergic to iodine-contrast agents, you will not experience any type of allergic reactions to these capsules.
Six hours later, you will return to the imaging department and the function of the thyroid will be measured with an instrument called a Thyroid Probe. This takes approximately two minutes. You are then taken into an imaging room where 4 images will be taken of the thyroid. These images will take approximately 45 minutes.
On occasion, a patient will be asked to return 24 hours later to sit in front of the Thyroid Probe a second time (2 minute procedure again).
